Planning for your rear projection screen |
Consider the variables to determine the correct screen size, placement and optical qualities. |
For legibility, we suggest this rule: L = the distance from the screen to the back row of seats. The screen height should equal or exceed L÷ 6 in all situations. For complex graphics, as in a command and control centre, the screen height may need to be as great as L ÷ 2.
The screen should be high enough so that all seats have an unobstructed view, but the screen centre should be no more than 20° above the eye level of any viewer. In a room with a level floor, the bottom of the screen should be 36" to 48" above the floor.
Ideally, all viewers should be seated within 30° of the projection axis, and never more than 45° off axis.
Draper rear projection screens are designed for use in lighted rooms. However, optical qualities will be enhanced of the lighting is controlled so that no direct light or reflected light strikes the screen.
Ideally, the depth of the projection room (behind the screen) should be 2x the screen width. This is often not feasible, so high quality first surface mirrors may be used.
