Planning for your rear projection screen

Consider the variables to determine the correct screen size, placement and optical qualities.
  • Size

For legibility, we suggest this rule: L = the distance from the screen to the back row of seats. The screen height should equal or exceed L÷ 6 in all situations. For complex graphics, as in a command and control centre, the screen height may need to be as great as L ÷ 2.

  • Placement

The screen should be high enough so that all seats have an unobstructed view, but the screen centre should be no more than 20° above the eye level of any viewer. In a room with a level floor, the bottom of the screen should be 36" to 48" above the floor.

  • Audience

Ideally, all viewers should be seated within 30° of the projection axis, and never more than 45° off axis.

  • Lighting

Draper rear projection screens are designed for use in lighted rooms. However, optical qualities will be enhanced of the lighting is controlled so that no direct light or reflected light strikes the screen.

  • Rearspace

Ideally, the depth of the projection room (behind the screen) should be 2x the screen width. This is often not feasible, so high quality first surface mirrors may be used.

StageScreen

Draper StageScreen

* New Product - July 09 *

In response to requests from leading AV rental dealers, the StageScreen is a totally new concept in projection screen design. It is designed specifically to be flown, but can also be used with legs. Either way, it is the strongest and most rigid screen on the market.
Draper’s new StageScreen saves setup time and money to offer a better return on investment than other screens currently available. With the StageScreen there’s no need to purchase multiple projection screens; the StageScreen allows you to build different screen formats and sizes with different combinations of the same parts. The more additional viewing surfaces and pieces you have the more sizes you can build.

  • The StageScreen utilises an 8” truss that is significantly stronger than traditional truss folding screens.
  • Draper performed in-house testing of the strength of the StageScreen truss compared to a folding truss screen. The results were dramatic: StageScreen proved to be over 60% stronger, holding strong long after the folding truss failed.
  • StageScreen can be assembled in about half the time of a comparable truss folding screen. (see video)
  • It is engineered to hold tolerance after repeated usage.
  • Colour coded frame sections ensure fast and easy assembly.
  • The image area of each screen is exact and true to format.
  • No hinges, no snaps, and no handy cranks are required.
  • Frame sections are connected with permanently attached threaded links and guide pins. No lost handy cranks.
  • StageScreen features a revolutionary new viewing surface attachment method. Using the attached DuraLoop™ bungee cord loops with handy nylon pull-tabs, simply hook the surface to the posts on the frame. DuraLoops are longer lasting than traditional snaps, and provide even self-centering tension for the viewing surface. You’ll never want to use snaps again.
  • Viewing surface is stretched perfectly flat, resulting in the highest picture quality. Standard viewing surfaces include: Black-Backed M1300, the perfect Matt White diffusing surface and Cineflex, a neutral grey for rear projection

Draper StageScreen Configuration Tool

This online tool will quickly help you to specify the components needed for the various Stagescreen sizes. If you already have some StageScreen sections in stock, simply enter the numbers and this tool will let you know what screen sizes can be built with those sections. Secondly, you can enter a specific image size and this tool will generate a list of StageScreen sections that you will need. Finally you have the opportunity to download a map detailing how to assemble the StageScreen for each size.
